Jupiter Air Conditioner Causes Smoky Scene

An air conditioning unit in Jupiter, FL resulted in a smoky haze wafting through a store tonight. Fire crews arrived to the Palm Beach County store located at the 6600 block of West Indiantown Road. The store was evacuated, though the smoky haze never mounted to an actual fire stemming from the rooftop air conditioning unit. The Miami air conditioning experts haven't heard all the details yet as to what caused the smoke, but it's an ominous reminder that you certainly need to have your air conditioner checked and fluids and filters maintained to prevent smoke, such as this, or something worse.

Over the summer, we shared reports of air conditioner fires that resulted from pooled water, loose wiring, and overall lack of maintenance. Be sure to prevent something of this caliber happening to you and give your air units the attention and preventative care they require.

How Much More Energy Consumption is Coming?

Energy efficient air conditioner systems are still a relevant and attention-getting topic. Not so long ago, power went out throughout the northern part of India, an effect of excessive energy consumption due to the new and plentiful use of air conditioners. India isn't the only region to have had this happen--its becoming an increasingly common occurrence and energy allotments are exceeded and overworked. New countries adopting the air condition culture are a sign that consumption is only going to increase--in fact, a recent Science Direct study fund that the air conditioning use is projected to be so high in Mumbai (just one city in India) that Mumbai alone will use 25% of the total American air conditioning consumption.

The Miami air conditioning repair team is nervous at what kind of global impact air conditioning use will soon take. As more cities grow economically, the need for air conditioning will also rise. Cities like Rio de Janeiro,  New Delhi, and Shanghai, among others, are hot much of the year and therefore require large ac usage.

Which Air Filter to Choose?

We've told you time and again how important it is to keep the air conditioning filter clean and free or debris. We've also discussed the importance of changing the filter--and we realize we haven't really offered guidance on how to pick a new one when the need arises. You want to be sure that the filter you get is one of good quality and simple in its design. The Miami air conditioning repair team is here to offer tips & tricks on knowing which model is best for you.

The best choice for a filter used to be fiberglass, but these days the most common options are the pleated style which offer optimal energy efficiency. Media filters are a common feature in new construction homes. Basically, this is a large filter on the backside of the furnace system that filters everything from the house and requires replacement every 6 months.

If you're in doubt and need a quick bit of expert advice, take a few photos of your current filter and head to a hardware store.

Seal Gaps to Maximize Your AC

Sealing gaps in your home is a low expense, high result way to ensure that you keep cool air inside your home and rather than leaking out the windows and doors. Weather stripping, caulking, and insulation methods are all materials available at a local hardware store where you can save yourself substantial money and also save your air conditioner from cranking extensively without satisfactory cooling as a result.

The Miami air conditioner professionals have a few ways for you to ensure that cracks and other air leaks are sealed and closed up:

Check windows. Cracks in the windows, windows that don't close all the way or don't line up properly can be an easy escape route for central air to escape.

Doors. Door frames with poor alignment or aged insulation strips can be a sneaky way for air to escape your home. Re-applying weatherstripping and replaced old warped food can help you fix these potential leaks.

Insulation. In the attic, pipes, and around the air conditioner there are areas where air can potentially leak out. Picking up some rolls of insulation is an inexpensive and effective way to seal up where leaks can be remedied and you can get the most cooling for your buck.

American Schools Look for AC Solutions

Throughout the nation, schools are still trying to devise plans to work adequate air conditioning into their school year budgets. While it should seem to be a no-brainer that air conditioning is a valid expense, the debate seems to lay around what date to begin turning on air conditioning from the county office to the district schools.  Classroom temperatures are controlled by an offsite office, so in the classroom teachers and officials have no control on in classroom settings, which is why the county needs to come to an agreement where students will be able to get the fresh flowing air that they need to stay healthy and focused in the classroom.

From Chicago to Baltimore, among other cities, these air conditioning debates are rising. Here in Miami, we know how essential air conditioning is, but in states where they get significant winter months, its easier to understand the confusion on when the need for air conditioning truly begins. Generally, the school year was the coolest time in many cities, but as annual temps continue to rise the need is greater.

How to Pick an Efficient Air Unit

In South Florida, an air conditioner is not a luxury--it's a necessity. With temperatures regularly in the 90s and even into the 100s, you have to have an affordable and effective method of cooling your home and beating the heat when the summer is at its most brutal.

One key element of getting a highly efficient air conditioner involves getting a unit sized right to your space. The right air conditioner is an essential decision as your family will rely on it heavily through much of the year here in South Florida. Not to mention, air conditioning units cost several thousands of dollars, so you want to research what made, model, and size are best for you. Don't be afraid to read reviews and explore consumer reports. The Miami air conditioning installation team have a few easy things to remember when it comes to selecting a model:

-Quieter models usually have less problems and are made to last
-SEER ratings are definitely worth reading--the higher the number, the more efficient
-Research which models and brands pride themselves on using the least energy
-Measure the area of your home, of course factoring in the ceilings, to get an accurate number of how much space the air unit will have to cool

Time to Check Your Air Units

As we near the closing months of 2012, your friends at the Miami air conditioning team want to urge you to have a maintenance and efficiency inspection performed on your air unit. Although many of us won't actually make a switch from using a/c to using our heater functions, it is important that we inspect and troubleshoot any issues that could arise in our air systems. Generally, performing these checks once or twice a year is encouraged. Ideally, you are able to use less cool air lately, and a great time to do these inspections is after the heaviest usage period--aka summer.

Many people make the incorrect assumption that they don't need someone to look at their air unit until something acts up or seems fishy. This is a dangerous misconception, especially since 99 percent of air conditioner breakdowns are preventable and usually traced back to lack of maintenance as a trigger for error. Save yourself from whopping air conditioner repair bills and the potential for dangerous error by getting your air unit inspected by a professional today.

Growing Up Without AC

Today, many Americans are dependent on their air conditioning like never before in history. While the temperatures are getting warmer in recent years, the dependence on ac is seemingly all around. Unfortunately, the problem with many homeowners and consumers is the way that they use air conditioning. Homes and offices are cooled to frigid temps where people are forced to pile on sweaters in the middle of summer. While we believe in the benefits of air conditioning, the Miami air conditioning team is also cautious to point out that people need to use their units in the right way.

One of the best ways to do this is by regulating air flow on a timer. There is no sense in letting air crank full blast while no one is in the space being cooled. Additionally, timers can allow units to turn on a period of time before people enter the building so that it is comfortable and cool upon arrival.

Also, people should rely on other entities aside from the air conditioning system to cool their homes. Using ceiling and oscillating fans and also keeping curtains drawn can contribute to a cooler climate in your space.

Aside from actual usage, there are also maintenance steps you can take to get the most out of your air conditioner. Cleaning the filter, having bi-annual checkups and draining coils and pans will be essential in a healthy and top-notch air conditioner.

Extreme Summer Heat Now the Norm?

It's hot outside here in Miami, and the Miami air conditioner team knows the value and need of a well-functioning air conditioner to make it through these sweaty summer months with ease. Maintenance is essential to well-working air unit that is easy on your bill each month and also efficient at keeping your home at a comfortable temperature.

Thankfully, there are ways to keep your house cool without spending a fortune in the summer. Tricks to the windows can keep spaces cooler--such as self-stick window tint. These sheets adhere to the window and can make the room significantly cooler, even in a room with notoriously strong west-setting sun rays.

Additionally, you shouldn't underestimate the value of quality blinds, shutters, and drapes. Aside from aesthetic value, they can also go a long way in keeping out obnoxious heat-seeking rays of sunlight. Outfit your windows with quality elements and it will go a long way--inversely, using low quality pieces may serve to just be a waste of money.

Why Air Conditioning Matters

Many people misuse air conditioning, which is something that we have addressed before. Inversely, some people don't use air conditioning at all. We aren't fans of extremism, we do believe there is healthy medium to using air conditioning for health reasons without having a largely detrimental impact on your energy consumption. While record heat is a definite occurrence this summer, you can still use ac in moderation and maintain a comfortable temperature.

In current US numbers, 87% of American homes are equipped with air conditioning. While multiple literary pieces de resistance have been published recently, touting the evils of air conditioning, have praised the benefit of lounging in the heat and encouraging fresh, warm, balmy air over engineered and chemical ridden air conditioning air.

The criticism is interesting--as very few bash the use of a heater in the cool winter months, many are ready to speak the evils of using air conditioning in the summer. While environmental factors are certainly changing, for the scarier, the fact is air conditioning alone can't be the cause. Scientific data has shown that more energy is used to heat homes than to cool them. The point is that you can use air conditioning wisely, in moderation and with the help of ceiling and stationary fans, and be comfortable. Browse our Miami air conditioning blog for more tips on using less and staying comfortably cool.

AC & The Planet

With many concerned about environmental issues, living more "green," and global warming- we have to address the role of air conditioning and how you can consume less energy and reduce your impact on the environment. The Miami air conditioner experts want to help you stay cool by consuming less--let's examine why that's important.

You've probably noticed that temperatures are rising with each year that passes. Air conditioning is used more and more each year also, to maintain comfort.

Developing countries are adding air conditioning, meaning thousands more are going to be using air conditioners throughout the months and years that pass. Electricity will be used more and more to power these units.

Freon was replaced with new HFCs, which are supposed to help lessen the impact on the ozone layer. Unfortunately, HFCs are greenhouse gases and they too will eventually leak out. Air conditioning has also made unlivable areas like Arizona and New Mexico livable. These areas do not have water and inflows of energy, and air conditioning is a necessity to survive in these areas. In the US, air conditioning byproduct accounts for half a million metric tons of energy. Air conditioning is often overused and is handled in a non-essential way by users--cranking it all day, setting thermostats in the 60s when a cool climate can be in the 70s and use less energy.

We want to encourage using your air smartly, not only for environmental reasons but also to lessen your utility bills. Keep the air on a timer, and if you have pets in the home all day you will need some air flow, but not set at 60. You can even have it go on and off and hour intervals, which is better than running all day.

What's the Deal on AC Pollution?

Improper use of air conditioning equipment can cause dangerous and severe indoor air pollution. So how do you protect yourself and your loved ones? The South Florida air conditioning team is here to tell you. First, let's examine possible illness or problems that can arise from air conditioners.

Air conditioning and it's pollutants may cause bacteria based respiratory tract infections. Pollutants flow into the home through the ventilation system and they come in a variety of types--biological, physical and chemical. Biological pollutants can accumulate in the air system and multiply throughout the fan coil and heat sinks. They are very dangerous to your health. Allergic diseases may also arise from pollutants.

Filters and heat sinks can accumulate a lot of debris and dirt--and these particles are transferred into the air supply. Bacteria, viruses, and other dangerous microorganisms can multiply rapidly. Heat sinks and filters need to be cleaned out and maintained to avoid health risks and complications. The air conditioner and all of its components should be cleaned once (or twice) each year to ensure that there is nothing breeding and growing inside the coils or vents that could harm you or your loved ones.

Prep Your Air Conditioner Before Storms

Hurricane season is one of the potential dangers that we must cope with as South Florida residents. Few things can be more troublesome than a storm headed straight for us, excessive winds, power outages and of course torrential downpour. There are precautions you need to take to protect machinery and other areas of your home, such as the windows. As Miami air conditioning repair professionals, we are going to focus on prepping your air conditioning unit for a storm.

Regular maintenance is a key element to a well-functioning air conditioner, whether in a storm or not. So keeping up on diagnostic checkups and easy tasks like changing the filter are a mandatory element of a healthy functioning air unit. As far as further storm precaution, you want to make sure the outdoor unit of your central air conditioning is strapped down to the concrete, which is a requirement of hurricane-prone areas.

Cool your home as much as you can pre-storm, then turn it off when the storm actually hits. The unit off will prevent the likelihood of power surges of system burnouts. Make sure the outdoor unit is free of damage before switching it back on. Also be sure there is not a puddle or pool of water around it, which can fry the unit when it is turned on.

Air Conditioning Helps Many Withstand Heat

With the increasing heat levels throughout South Florida this summer, homeowners are not only relying on their existing air conditioning units, but also buying additional units and undergoing upgrades and repairs to ensure their homes are steadily cooled and comfortable.  The Miami air conditioner experts know how hot is is outside--and the importance of air conditioning not only on your comfort, but also on your health.

In addition to tending to your air conditioner, there are steps which need to be taken to ensure your home is also conducive to conserving energy. Utility bills will reflect how efficient your home is- and there are also a few key elements to inspect in your home to see how it fares in energy efficiency. First of all, you should inspect your air unit. The Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating (SEER) is a rating that can tell you about your energy usage. Air units from about 10 years ago have ratings between 5-10 SEER, and more current models that are designed with more modern environmental concerns in mind have around a 13 SEER on average.

Keep in mind, the higher the SEER, the higher the efficiency of the unit!

Happy 110th Birthday to Air Conditioning!

Or should we say Happy Belated? Two weeks ago, on July 17th, the air conditioner turned 110. For over a century, some form of cooling apparatus has been utilized by people to make temperatures and living conditions more tolerable. The first unit to change the way indoor air conditioning worked was in 1902 at a Brooklyn office building. This device not only served to provide cool air, but also to remove humidity from the space--a first of its kind.

The model in 1902 was created by Willis Carrier, "The Father of Air Conditioning" and the namesake behind today's Carrier air conditioners. The Miami air conditioning experts are thankful by Carrier's skill and study, and glad that he sought to improve the existing air conditioner models. Happy Birthday to the air conditioner, and may you continue to grow, evolve, and improve!

Fixing Your AC Can Cost a Lot

We've mentioned the likelihood of sticker shock in terms of air conditioning repair, but its official: RU-22 is expensive to replace. The chemical commonly used as Freon in air conditioners across the globe for the past 40 years skyrocketed in price in recent months due to the federal government's call to quit producing it. Specifically, it's about a 300 percent uptick in price compared to last year.

The Miami air conditioner experts know its put air conditioner owners in quite a predicament-after all, with costs exceeding $500 to repair Freon leaks, it makes you wonder if it's cheaper or more cost efficient to upgrade to a newer unit that doesn't require Freon. Considering that Freon is already up to $90 a pound, up from $10 a pound a few years ago, the trend is likely to continually rise.

Renters & Their Rights for AC

Believe it or not, here in Florida, tenants are not entitled to working air conditioner in their leased residences. As if that isn't enough, mold and leaks aren't legitimate excuses to exit a lease. Inside some apartments, it can reach in excess of 90 degrees. We hear horror stories in the news of people found dead in apartments with soaring temperatures--so what gives?

Apparently, the law in Florida requires landlords to provide heating in the wintertime, but no requirements for cooling in the summertime. When temps easily hit 100 degrees, it's quite a confusing law. Basically, what this teaches tenants (whether its intended to or not) is that you should read your lease with a fine tooth comb and be sure any amenities, such as ac, are clearly spelled out and provided to you.

The Miami air conditioning team want to be sure you are happy with your living arrangements and also living in comfortable temperatures. Be sure to take the necessary steps and protect yourself--don't trust that someone will fix a broken ac out of the goodness of their hearts.

Air Conditioning & the Economy

A new book has been released detailing the effects of air conditioning in terms of productivity and the economy. While some third world countries experience droughts and other conditions that have debilitated their economies, the United States is an example of a western civilization that has increased its productivity output thanks to air conditioning. Let's examine.

According to Stan Cox, author of "Losing Our Cool," U.S. historically had work patterns that mimicked the weather. In historical times prior to air conditioning, worker productivity and store hours were grossly affected. Cities were emptied in summer months and many Americans spent time on porches and by the water. The advent of air conditioning allowed for city populations to resume in the summer, and for stores to stay open year 'round.

However, the impact of ac has not been all positive. In fact, air conditioning consumption in American homes has doubled in the past 12 years, and now is a whopping 20 percent of the average household's electricity use. As air conditioners gain popularity in China and India, the global use of air conditioning will be quite damaging in terms of emissions. Here at the Miami air conditioning experts, we recommend using a smart and programmable air conditioner with Energy Star approval ratings.

Air Conditioners & The Noise They Make

Air conditioner compressors can be a noisy piece of equipment, either for you or for your neighbors depending on where it is positioned. Depending on the model, the usage, and how close your homes are, anything from vibrations to loud thumps can occur and be quite irritable. Luckily, there are tricks you can use to cut back on noise and vibration, and the Miami air conditioner experts are going to share them with you.

Getting the compressor balanced is a good place to start, and it can help with the vibration greatly. If it is still an issue after balancing, you may need to use some shock absorbers underneath the compressor or HVAC unit. You can also reduce vibrational noise with a compressor cover. Also, when placing the compressor try to place it behind your house or in a place that is farthest away from a neighboring home.

Make Sure the Elderly Have AC

Often, we hear of people losing their lives due to heat exhaustion and a lack of air conditioning. Many times the people who pass away in these conditions are elderly. Because of this, we here at the Miami air conditioning professionals want to make sure you and your loved ones have appropriate air conditioning and survive the hot summer days.

Sometimes, the elderly either have an inclination to feel cooler, no matter the actual temperature. Other times, they may not be able to get up and change the thermostat. Luckily, there are things you can do to ensure your family members are ok. One way to keep your elderly relatives healthy and hydrated is by stocking them with popsicles, water and jello on hot days. Fill a thermos with fluids and keep it close to where your elderly relatives sit, so they don't have to get up and use energy to hydrate.

Also, have yourself or another family member pop in periodically and tend to the elderly relatives. While they  might not have the energy to get up get water, they will likely appreciate someone bringing them a refreshing glass of water or other cooling liquid.

The Air Conditioning Epidemic

About 30 years ago, air conditioning was not a normal amenity for people to have--it was by all means a luxury. Hot summer days meant sweating, lemonade, and the sprinklers in the yard. Today, however, many Americans crank the air conditioning regardless of the environmental or financial detriment. Gone are the days of fanning yourselves amongst your neighbors--now people would rather hole up indoors and watch tv alone with the a/c on high. Unfortunately, it's been debated that the reason the temps keep climbing higher and higher is directly related to the overuse of air conditioning and the negative impact it adds to global warming.

So what do we, at the Miami air conditioner team, suggest we do to remedy this? Well, first off, monitor your usage. There's no need to keep your air blasting at 65 degrees when you're at work--learn to use the timers. Also, spending time outdoors and using the air only when you are home and sleeping is a great way to cut down on consumption. Here in Miami there's not denying that air conditioning is a crucial element to indoor comfort. Also, use ceiling fans more to cut back air conditioner use. Pumping in cold air and letting a fan circulate it is a great way to use less energy and chemicals.

Leaky Air Conditioners Can Cause Fires

Recently, South Florida news outlet the Sun Sentinel reported on how air conditioners may be associated with cooling and making you more comfortable, there are dangers associated with these pieces of equipment. Increasingly across the South Florida area, firefighters are being called to put out air conditioner-caused blazes.

Leaky air conditioners not only drain freon and other chemicals, but they are also a fire hazard. Of the recent three air conditioner fires in South Florida, the cause of the infernos was a leaking air handler in a condo storage closet. The leaks caused short circuiting and subsequent flames. These took place in Delray Beach and one near Boynton Beach. The Miami air conditioner repair team are glad to report that no one was injured thanks to smoke alarms.

There are precautions you can take to avoid a potential fire, and we'd like to share them. Pouring diluted bleach can clean out the pipes from forming algae resulting in clogs. Find out if your units have floater switches that prevent drainage overflow. Check the unit regularly and monitor leakage and drainage or any lack thereof.

Easy Ways to Save on AC

While air conditioners often make up the meat of your electricity bills, you should be interested on how to cut back usage and spend less on your monthly power bill. Luckily, our friends at the South Florida air conditioning experts are here to show you how!

First and foremost, make sure the filter is clean each month. Dust and debris can build up quickly, causing your air units to work harder to pump cool air. A harder working ac=a higher utility bill.

Clean and protect your air conditioner. As air conditioners pump away day after day, you need to make sure they are adequately cleaned and cared for. Cleaning the air conditioner is an easy way to save money and cut power usage. The outside and inside units both need caring for--spray off debris and wipe away dust to ensure your air is clean.

Use less. While this may seem like an obvious way to cut your bills, many people discount it as a possibility. Many people overuse their air conditioners and don't realize it--in the early mornings or evenings, take advantage of cool breezes and open the windows. Once the sun begins to come out, then you'll want to shut the windows and circulate cool air. Also, setting the thermostat higher will still effectively cool your place--and cost you less.

Should You Use a Window Air Unit?

In older homes, the ability to install central air can be tricky, costly, and near impossible. However, living in Miami means you have to certainly have some sort of air flow--enter the window air conditioner. While these are more commonly seen in cities up north, such as New York, they can be just as effective in South Florida if they are installed properly.

There are a few things to know before you pick up a wall air conditioner to ensure you've got the right one for your home.  Choose the right size (you can take the square footage of the room and use that information on a trip to a Home Depot or Lowe's), and you'll be sure to know how many BTUs you need to adequately cool off a room. You also want to open the window to see how high it can go, because you don't want to pick an air unit that is taller than that--it won't be able to fit.

Try to place the unit in a window that isn't in direct sunlight, which will keep it from having to work too hard.

Wash the window before you put the unit in, and make sure there isn't any peeling paint around the interior frame. Also, you want to place the unit near a three prong plug so that you don't have to use an extension cord--an extension cord will make your air unit a fire hazard.

When you install it, make sure it isn't tilting downwards--this can result in problems with drainage. Be sure to put foam at the top and at the bottom of the raised unit to prevent hot air from seeping in/cool air from seeping out.

Keeping Cool in the Heat of Summer

Depending on the size of your home or apartment, there are certain tips that apply to getting the most out of an air conditioning unit. While many people choose to install central air, this can pose a problem for renters who don't have that ability. Generally landlords won't want to alter the air situation, so it's important that you consider alternatives. The Miami air conditioner experts want to help you figure out what can be done when you can't install central.

Wall units are an easy and temporary way to pump in cool air--just be sure you have the right plugs and outlets so that you don't override a circuit or use to much power where it isn't meant to be distributed. There are easy tutorials online that can help you install a window unit.

For more flexibility (and less intrusion) you can also look into portable air conditioners. They are towers that you can easily move from room to room to cool off where you're spending your time rather than an entire house that has vacant areas.

Remember, whatever you decide to purchase--make sure it is Energy Star Compliant!

Do You Have the Right Size AC?

Getting an air conditioner that is the right size is an essential step in cooling your home properly.  All air conditioners are measured in BTUs--now you need to figure out how many BTUs are right for your home. The Miami air conditioner experts want to make sure you've got the right equipment in your home.

Be sure to analyze the air conditioner that your home used before. This is often the most accurate way to choose a new one, because it's what worked in your house before. If you feel it may be the wrong size you need, you can view your neighbors air units (with their permission of course), to see what they are using and if its different than yours.

Measure the square footage of your home. Climate and square footage are the factors used to determine what kind of air unit you should be using. Finally, you want to use that information on a BTU estimation tool to see how many BTUs are right for your home. Then you want to check your load calculation for a professional estimate of your air conditioner size.

Your numbers might not be 100% accurate, but they will certainly be on the right track!

Are Your Air Vents Emitting a Musty Smell?

Air conditioners serve to remove humidity from indoors and also circulate cool air. But what if you smell something moldy or musty coming from the air unit? It's likely that you have mold somewhere in your homes heating and cooling system. The Miami air conditioner professionals want to help you determine what kind of mold problem you might have.

The size of the air conditioner plays a role in the likelihood of mold. If your ac is too big for your home, it may be unable to correctly remove the moisture from the air. This results in mold spores growing, and also in a musty smell.

Air leaks can also result in a musty smell. When air drains through drainage systems and drip trays, there are several areas where leaks can occur. Stagnant water and broken drains can result in real problems that need to be fixed by a professional.

Ducts and vents are also a place where mold spores can grow. A duct cleaning company will be able to help you target these growths.

Did you know that running an air system on Economy can result in mold growth? Running on fan-only is an ideal way to help with evaporating any moisture that has built up within the unit and vent system.

How Much Does Duct Cleaning Cost?

According to the EPA, homes need to have their ducts cleaned when they start to show mold or are infested with vermin. For single homes with one furnace, the cost to clean the ducts can be anywhere from $400 to $600. For a two-furnace home, the cost can be anywhere from $600-$1,000. Any company that charges a fraction of this, or substantially more, is worth looking into and researching.
However, some companies charge by the hour for cleaning--rather than a flat fee. Charges may run from $90 per hour up to $125 per hour.

So what goes on during a duct cleaning? The Miami air conditioner experts know that when we conduct a cleaning, the duct work along with the fans and heating coils are cleaned. Cleaning the furnace is also part of the job. Asbestos removal is a different task, and it requires the work of a professional to remove asbestos before duct cleaning can begin.

DIY Weatherstripping

Weatherstripping is an important element to getting the most of your air conditioning. With cracks and leaks in the doors, windows, and other areas, the air that you are paying for is essentially seeping right back outside. So how to solve this problem inexpensively and easily? The Miami air conditioner professionals have you covered!

Weatherstripping materials can range from self stick foam to sheets of rubber screwed into frames. Before you apply either, you want to measure the space around which you need to weatherstrip, and then clean the area before applying anything.

Using scissors, cut the weatherstripping to the exact length that you will need. You can use the adhesive the product comes with or nail it down if you feel it isn't secure enough.

Close the door/window that you have applied the insulation to. It should close properly, but if it doesn't--check the weatherstripping and make sure it is aligned properly.

Save Money on Air Repairs

Here at the Miami air conditioner experts, we know that no one likes spending their hard earned money on repairs--whether it's for your air conditioner or for your car, and so on. With that in mind, we've decided to help you put together a list of ways to save money on ac repairs.

One of the things we recommend the most is having an expert come perform a leak search. By properly maintaining and servicing your ac, you are likely to have less problems with it.

Research a company before you invite them into your home or hire them. While many companies aim to help consumers, some also try to take advantage of them. It's better you do your due diligence rather than become the victim of a scam.

If you still have a unit that uses R-22 you're in a quandary--the chemical has gone up significantly in cost, but it is still a necessity for many air conditioners. If you have to buy this, we suggest buying a little more than you might need at the present time. If you don't want to fork out several hundred dollars for it, we encourage you to look at new units on the market that operate without.

Thieves Still Targeting Air Conditioners

In an epidemic sweeping the country, thieves are still targeting the outdoor air conditioning units at homes, churches, schools, businesses, and other buildings to rob the units of scrap metal. For the past year (possibly longer), news headlines have talked of the growing crime rates of air units due to thieves wanting the copper and aluminum scraps from the machine's interior.

One enormous problem with the copper and aluminum theft is that for the owners, it is quite costly to replace the stolen goods. While a thief may make a few hundred bucks off of parts, the cost for the owner is well into the thousands. Surveillance and alarm systems are recommended at this point to deter thieves from targeting your machinery. The Miami air conditioning team knows what an investment air conditioners can be....so protect yours!

Amazon Workers Finally Get A/C

A while ago we were horrified to hear about the disgruntled Amazon employees who were in dire working conditions as heat level skyrocketed yet air conditioning failed to be provided. Finally, the workers have got what they asked for, lessening the need for the emergency medical techs Amazon had on site to remedy heat exhaustion and other maladies. The company has installed 40 rooftop air conditioners to cool its 615,000 square foot warehouse in Allentown, PA.

The Miami air conditioner experts know what a difference cool air flow makes. Employees are also happy--as outside heat levels broke 90 degrees, employees inside the factory didn't even break a sweat. We're excited these hardworking individuals finally get the cool break they deserve.

Cooling Your Home for Less

Part of getting the most out of your air conditioner is understanding how to use it in the right way. While we've all heard ideal temperature settings and also about set thermostats, there's also a key to understanding energy efficiency and monitoring your consumption. Here at the Miami air conditioning experts, we want to help you beat the heat--for less, of course!

Utilizing technology is certainly one way to get your utility bill on your side, but also realistically using what you need. Often, when you cool your whole house, you let a lot of air not only go to waste, but you work your a/c harder and run the risk of tiring out your unit. Learn to utilize fans--whether ceiling or floor standing, to help circulate air that is cooled rather than having cool air cranked out in droves. Also, you can likely cut back your usage just by realizing how much you are using day to day...it's certainly worth looking in to!

Are You Spending Like the Average American on AC?

According to a recent study by the U.S. Department of Energy, a typical single-family home spends about $2,200 each year on home energy expenses. Houses equipped with central cooling often see that as the main culprit of energy consumption totaling about $1000 per year of usage of the total $2,200.

So how to reduce your usage? Let's see if we can't bring the national average down a hair. Insulation and sealing is one of the most effective ways to cut your bill down, you can even get cost-effective and energy-saving windows put in!

Energy efficient siding is also a worthwhile investment, which will contribute to the home's insulation ability. Higher insulation levels can save you around 20 percent on your electricity bill, a percentage that can certainly be of value over the course of a year.

Beat Summer Heat & Save Money

As the temperatures rise, your air conditioning consumption likely does too. While usage may be the obvious cause for air conditioner bills, there is also lesser known factors that could raise your bills. Even the installation could be causing you problems! Here at the Miami air conditioner experts, we want to help you save money, stay cool and have an enjoyable residential climate year-round.

Obvious tips like keeping the temp set at a moderate level and cleaning the filter are been-there, done that information. We want to broaden your knowledge of your air unit. Getting a diagnostic check-up can help curtail big problems by nipping small issues in the bud. Little parts are easier to replace than overhauling systems or the need to buy a new unit all together! We can't stress the importance of preventative maintenance. Hire an expert to inspect your air unit today.

Quick Fixes for Your Leaky A/C

When it comes to problems with your air conditioner, you want to nip them in the bed sooner rather than later. Air leaks are one of those problems that may be small, or may be a clue to a bigger issue underway. It's no surprise to the Miami air conditioner pros that leaky a/c problems are the cause for about 90% of air service calls, so we want to help you by understanding what you may be able to handle on your own.

Sometimes, the cause for a leak is one of the main problems that you need to check out first. There may be a crack or hole in the overflow drain pain. A more obvious cause would be that the air filter is clogged with dirt, and the other culprit is the condensate line--it may be blocked.

The overflow pan problem is easy to check out with the help of a flashlight. Check corners, the edges and near where the most leakage seems to take place.

Second, the clogged filter. This is an easy problem to fix and to avoid in the future. You should change the air conditioning filter monthly, as debris can accumulate rather quickly.

The third cause, the condensate line, is the most common problem for many. You can call for help on this, or you can pick up an online goodie called the Mighty Pump. Retailing for $50, you can be the judge if it's worth the investment.

Air Conditioning Reserved for Honors Students Only?

According to a recent article in the news, a school located in Southern China is allowing only their honor students to utilize the classrooms with air conditioning. According to China Daily, most classrooms are left to cool off with fans, while the honors classes (filled with the smartest students) can take advantage of the a/c.

Here at the Miami air conditioner professionals, we know that unpleasant air temperatures can put a huge strain on the learning process. Students in the average classes even pooled money to buy air units, but school administrators denied their endeavor. We've heard stories over here with school/air conditioning problems, but to allow only a certain group of students to benefit from comfortable air conditions just doesn't quite make sense to us. What are your thoughts?

Don't Get Scammed by Fake Duct Cleaners

While we here at the Miami air conditioning experts often stress the value of air conditioner maintenance and check-ups, we also want to remind you to keep your wits about you when you schedule a new company to check out your air unit and recommend maintenance or new parts. As reported in a Boston paper, there are shady companies who have solicited themselves as duct work cleaners--only to swindle trusting homeowners out of their money.

While duct work cleaning isn't astronomically expensive, it isn't generally under $100. When companies are offering $49 or $99 service, you should be wary. Angie's List is also a great resource to use to look for solid and reputable companies, and also to read reviews.

Also, ask around! Compare estimates, ask neighbors and co-workers who they use, and do your research before jumping in with a new company. It could save you a major headache!

Program Donates A/C Units to the Elderly

With heatwaves imminent this summer, having a healthy and working air conditioner is certainly a vital aspect of staying cool. For elderly people on a fixed income, this is not always an easy endeavor. Air conditioner prices and maintenance fees are only continuing to rise as the years go by. In some areas, such as Janesville, Wisconsin, there is an organization dedicated to aiding these financially strapped citizens to ensure they stay healthy and cool in the hottest times of the year.

The need for an organization of this kind is certainly apparent in a place like South Florida. Here at the Miami air conditioning team, we know how unbearably hot it can get in the winter months. Beneficiaries in Wisconsin have raved that the organization has saved their lives--that there is no way they could have battled the summer heat without air conditioning. By donating wall units, there is assurance that at least one of the rooms in their home can offer cool air.

30 Air Conditioners Stolen from School

While news of air conditioner theft is not anything new, this latest case has certainly set a record of sorts. In Glendale, AZ, all thirty of the air conditioners at the Omega Charter School were stolen or vandalized while the school was on spring break. The students and teachers at the facility are having trouble concentrating in the intense heat. To replace the air units, principal Eric Pawlak has shared that it will cost about $80,000. That money comes directly from classroom funding, thereby limiting resources for the upcoming year.

The Miami air conditioner team has learned that the school is hoping to garner funds from local business donations to help curb the cost from the nonprofit facility's own pockets. If you're interested in helping out, contact the school at 623-979-7173.

Air Conditioning Costs to Soar this Summer

The rising costs associated with the cutback of R-22 production is poised to cause serious problems for many this summer as the temps heat up. The demographic that may be hit the hardest? Elderly citizens living on fixed incomes. The odds of heat exhaustion and death is certainly a possibility.

So what's with the phasing out of R-22? Well, the chemical is a refrigerant for a/c units that also is harmful to the ozone layer. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency wants to slow production by 45 percent from last year's amount. Those with leaky a/c's will certainly feel the burn in their wallets as they replace fluids that have skyrocketed in price. How high have price tags jumped? In 2008, a 30lb. drum of R-22 was $55. Two months ago, the same drum cost $385.

It's best to perform a diagnostic check on your Miami air conditioning unit and prevent any leaks from forming or getting any bigger. Schedule an appointment today!

Initiatives to Use Less Energy-A New Trend?

The Public Power District in Omaha is trying to put a cap on residents and their energy consumption with an interesting financial incentive--with locals getting paid for using less energy! Residents enroll in an Air Conditioning Management Program, and a specialist will help you manage your central air and maximize your energy consumption. Here in Miami, we're optimistic something similar could come our way in the future! With how much of our day to day life depends on air conditioning and beating the heat, there could be a great market for air conditioning management.

The management works like this: a contractor will come install a box that is directly wired to the home air conditioner. The management will take place between a window of the day during the hottest days of the year, switching the unit on and off to keep air flowing but not excessively so. Learn more about the technology here--hopefully we'll see if the idea catches on and spreads South!

Earth Week Tips You Can Practice at Home

This year, why not embrace the energy saving agenda of Earth Week and incorporate a few tricks into your home to save money and conserve energy? The Miami air conditioning professionals are here to share a few ideas! Some things are easier than others, but remember that every little bit helps when it comes to conserving the environment.

Still got an old, outdated air conditioner? Now may be the time for you to upgrade to an Energy Star approved unit. These models use up to 25 percent less energy than recent models and up to 40 percent less energy than their prehistoric counterparts dating back longer than a decade.

Clean the filter! This will increase efficiency and cut back on how hard your unit has to work.

Size the air conditioner appropriately. If you get one the right size, you'll cut down humidity, you'll maximize the life of an air unit, and you'll get the most efficiency out of it too.

While Earth Week is a designated week on the calendar, you should really treat every day like it's Earth Day.

Can Air Conditioning Keep Allergies at Bay?

Many people have allergies that come rolling in with the warm weather, and here in South Florida there is certainly no shortage of pollen. However, tree pollen allergies aren't the only allergy culprits coming around this spring--there's another outdoor pollen that could cause discomfort: grass pollen. In some areas, there may even be double the allergies! Molds are also at a high right now, so the outdoors can really cause allergic problems for many Americans looking to get outside.

So, what can you do? According to doctors at the Cleveland Clinic, there's more to combating allergies than simply taking antihistamines. Using your air conditioner to keep cool and shutting the windows can go a long way in deterring pollen problems. In fact, you'll cut the indoor pollen by about 90 percent! If you need further advice on keeping cool & staying comfortable be sure to reach out to your favorite South Florida air conditioner experts!

How Much A/C Drip is Normal?

Air conditioner condensation is a normal part of a healthy, functioning air conditioner. But sometimes, too much drip can be a sign of a faulty machine. So how do you know how much drip (and where) is a sign of a healthy air conditioner? The Miami air conditioning professionals will help you!

Air conditioners can be misunderstood. They don't solely project cold air into your home, they "condition" air, and they work to reduce humidity. The condensation that collects is similar to the process that occurs when condensation forms on the glass of an iced drink, only this condensation is occurring on cold surfaces of the air conditioning unit.

The amount of condensation depends on humidity levels as well as the size, efficiency and installation of the air conditioner. Drips should occur a majority of the time at the back of the air unit--and drips elsewhere may be signs of a problem. Dripping from the front could mean that you have installation errors. This is serious, because it could lead to mold problems.

Give Your A/C a Workout

Spring is here, and the need for air conditioning is certainly apparent. In the interest of saving your air conditioner and avoiding problems with your air conditioner unit, you'll want to give it a little workout and make sure that it's up to par for the coming months of summer.

A standard repair for your air conditoner in an inexpensive yet highly efficient part of owning an air conditioner. Considering that here in Miami, your air conditioner will be running an high to beat the 100+ degrees heat. Scheduling a checkup for your air conditioner is a process that you need to have a hands-on impact with. When the air maintenance worker arrives, pay attention to the process and the things that the professional says. Request a checklist that shows the status of your air conditioner parts and anything that may need to be replaced in the near future.

Man Argues with Mom Over A/C, Puts Her In Hospital

An Indianapolis man got in a heated debate with his mother on Sunday night regarding an air conditioner unit, reports say. The 24-year-old son wanted to take his mother's air conditioner and laptop from her home and when his mother tried to stop him as he walked upstairs to grab the goods, he pulled out a stun gun and fired it at her several times.

When officers arrived on the scene, the 53-year-old woman was unconscious and taken for treatment at St. Vincent Hospital. The son, Adelino Sims, was arrested for battery with injury, criminal recklessness, and theft/receiving of stolen property.

Air Repairs Increasingly Difficult in Panama City Beach, FL

Air conditioning repairs in Florida just got a kink in the process, thanks to Panama City Beach city officials. Now, before an air conditioning repairman can replace an air conditioner in a customer's home, they must obtain a city permit. The purpose of the permit is to ensure that the state and federal energy laws and statutes are followed.

The problem? Air conditioner professionals in the area say that the process will require more labor on the part of the air technician, therefore running up the customer's bill. Basically, the process will make each tech certify a building's cooling needs, conduct a load calculation, and inspect the duct system and insulation before obtaining a permit to move forward with repair.

The city says they are only trying to follow federal and state laws regarding air conditioning.

Air Conditioning Needed Earlier This Year

While the use of air conditioning in March in Miami is no surprise, there are some areas in the country where the need for air conditioning this early in the year is quite abnormal. For example, in Michigan, the need for air conditioning has thrown off automated school air systems and also places of employment, such as Plant Operations.

Most businesses are accustomed to switching on the air conditioning at the end of April, which is when the area would historically warm up and allow for temperatures that let the units work at peak performance. The concern lies in the future temperatures, because if the heat wave subsides and brings back icy temps (like New York recently experienced) then there is a risk of water freezing inside the air conditioner system and damaging the equipment--extensively.

R22 to Triple in Cost This Summer

We have previously reported on how the use of R22 is being phased out by new air conditioner models. While the initiative is great for the environment, it's also put air conditioner owners in a financial quandary as rates are set to rise. The fact that NEW models won't use the chemical doesn't help the existing air conditioners that families and businesses have installed in their home or office. Now, refilling an air conditioner with the discontinued chemical will cost up to three times its usual charge, due to the low supply and existing demand.

R22 is the previous coolant to Freon. The chemical is being phased out by declaration of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Here at the Miami air conditioner experts, we advise getting your unit checked out and any leaks or problems fixed sooner rather than later. The longer that time passes the more the price may be driven up for R22.

South Florida Man Dies While Installing Air Conditioner

Last week, a young man from Hollywood, FL was installing an air conditioner on the roof of a warehouse in Boca Raton. Reports say that a co-worker of the victim, Jason Baltzley, 34, advised Baltzley to steer clear of the metal sheets on the roof, as they were covering a shaft that plunged straight to the ground level of the building. It seems Baltlzey discarded the warning, and he died upon impact of the concrete floor 30 feet below his work station.

The Miami air conditioning team at Edd Helms would like to extend sincere condolences to everyone who was affected by the passing of Baltzley. As a peer in our industry, it is a reminder that our work is a very serious endeavor and safety should be regarded at all times.

Michigan Students Walk Out of Hot Classrooms

Today, the Flint, Michigan school district had an interesting occurrence, when between 150-200 students decided to walk out of classrooms due to the heat. The Flint Northern High School air conditioners were not turned on, despite temperatures outdoors around 80 degrees. Despite the uncomfortable conditions and amount of students who left, classes were not officially cancelled.

In fact, not only were classes still on, but the students who left can now be disciplined to unlawful protest, according to district spokesperson Bob Campbell.

What do you think? Here at the Miami air conditioning experts, we know what's its like to be in extreme heat and no air circulating. While it may be early for Michigan to experience temperatures like today, the school should have a way to activate the air conditioners to avoid overheating of students. Agree?

Teens Dangerously Abusing Air Conditioner Chemicals

In Virginia, a new problem has arisen involving air conditioners. No, it isn't the theft of copper parts--its something much more dangerous: teenagers are huffing the Freon from the air conditioner units in order to get high. Teens have been found filling balloons and bags with the air as a means of inhaling it. While the story was on the local news in Virginia, we're sure it's happening in other parts of the country as well.

Parents should be concerned not only at the hundreds in chemical costs, but also in the potentially life-threatening side effects that can occur from inhaling Freon. It is a highly dangerous chemical that actually dissolves brain tissue. Schools, businesses, and homeowners are urged to put locks on the air conditioner units to avoid suspicious activity of huffing Freon. If you are a parent, your Miami air conditioner friends want to encourage you to explain the dangers and risks that Freon can cause. Knowledge is power, after all.

Extend Your Investment by Tuning Up Your A/C

So, you've made the plunge and purchased a new air conditioner. Now, you need to take the necessary steps to protect your purchase and maximize the money that you've put towards this machinery. Make it a point to perform regular maintenance on your air conditioner, because it requires a little TLC, as most machines do. The Miami air conditioning experts are here to tell you everything you need to know about your new purchase!

In a place like South Florida, air conditioners are constantly cranking. Regular maintenance check-ups will ensure that the machine is performing at its best, isn't being overworked, and that failure isn't around the corner. In fact, it's been said that with regular check-ups, your air conditioner will last around 15-20 years, unlike the unchecked units that fizzle out around 10-12 years.  Check ups that ensure your air unit is running properly will also save money on your monthly utility bill.

Air Conditioning Companies Prepare for Competition

As we begin to near the global air conditioning "season," there is plenty of chatter going around regarding all of the developments in the air conditioning industry. Big Korean brands such as LG and Samsung have reported a loss in sales in recent months, but prices for air conditioning units are on the rise. Japanese and Indian air conditioner brands showed to be viable competition last year, with flagship brands such as Hitachi, Toshiba and Panasonic.

Here at Edd Helms Miami air conditioning, we support brands Rheem, York, Trane and Carrier. We also sell and service every major brand.

ACR Show in Birmingham

In about two weeks, the first ACR (air conditioning and refrigeration) Show will be held at the NEC in Birmingham, UK. From March 13-15, visitors will come view the latest products and technology for commercial and industrial air conditioning. Also taking place over the event will be a seminar addressing issues affecting the entire industry. While we understand this is a long ways from Miami, it's essential to remember that Miami air conditioning is only a small portion of the market that is out there.

The exhibitor list is long and thorough, and sure to be filled with networking opportunities galore. Check out the official event website to learn more: http://www.acrshow.co.uk/page.cfm/Link=1/t=m/goSection=1.

Conserve Gas by Way of Your Car A/C

Here at the Miami air conditioning experts, we know that air conditioning isn't just for your home or office--it's for keeping you cool on the go as well. However, recent gas price hikes have made us all pay attention to how much we are consuming--and how to cut back. In your car, cutting the a/c usage can save gas. But without the a/c cranking...how to stay cool?

The key isn't cutting air conditioning usage entirely, it's just about using it smarter.  Use it sparingly, and always utilize the economy or re-circulation settings to ensure your car is using the more efficient manner of auto a/c service. These settings reduce the amount of outside air that gets pumped in and therefore also cooled.

While is certainly gets hot here in Miami, there are days (like today!) where rolling down the windows and taking advantage of a free windy breeze can also be cooling.

Are Air Conditioned Spaceships in Our Future?

Two New Zealand boys are on the forefront of science, thanks to a YouTube Space Lab global science contest. The boys, who are Derek Chan, 16 and Patrick Zeng, 17, beat out thousands of entrants to catch the attention of Stephen Hawking. Their experiment focused on heat transfer in microgravity--how fluids were made hot & cold in space there there was no gravity to move heat around. Their experiment used a heater and thermal resistors.

In short, the experiment could lead to NASA scientists pursuing air conditioning and insulation in spaceships to provide a better environment and more comfortable space for future trips. The boys will travel to NASA headquarters for an an awards dinner in March and will find out if they have won the contest overall.

Air Conditioner Maintenance--for your Safety!

Early this morning in Australia, a man's home caught on fire due to a smoking air conditioner unit. As a witness describes, the air conditioning unit was smoking, and then suddenly lit up "like a Roman candle." The witness ran next door to wake up his neighbor and alert him of the impending flames, and he climbed to the roof (where the unit is located) to attempt to put out the fire.

Firemen who arrived on the scene commented on how homeowners should be on top of their air conditioner maintenance. Keep your ears alert for any change in sounds or any difference in performance--it may mean a part is failing or needs replacement.

While the man from this situation was able to put out the flames, he suffered a bill of $150,000 in fire damage.

Opening Windows May Help Your Health

According to recent studies, friendly bacteria that is found outdoors can fend off potentially deadly microbes that arise from air conditioning in ultra-sterile environments. The studies, by Jack Gilbert of Argonne National Laboratory in Chicago, are meant to support the idea that air conditioning and an ultra-sterile space may contribute to infections. While we aren't saying air conditioning is dangerous, we're just sharing that fresh air is also an important element to your daily routine!

The study is supported by showing that open windows help to monitor the composition of microbial bacterias found on surfaces. Excessive use of antibacterial wipes and solutions can actually take away good bacteria, and therefore lose the protective elements that the good bacteria can provide in protecting you from the bad.

Just remember, wherever you are, getting outdoors and allowing fresh air to flow in to your lungs is an essential part of living healthy!

The Rising Cost of Refrigerant

As with most necessities, the cost of air conditioning refrigerant went up this past winter. But they didn’t just rise in cost slightly—they rose over 200 percent!

Most homeowners have grown accustomed to the $150-200 sticker price for replacing the refrigerant, but that number range has easily doubled. In the process of limiting the creation of R-22 and attempting to wean it off the air market, an instant need was created—therefore allowing for prices to rise across the board. In fact, experts say that the compound will become more expensive over the next few years--as it continues to get rarer and rarer.

Despite the recent legislation to cut the production of R-22, about 75% of the home air conditioners running today require the material. The fact that the required component will not be available for all will likely prompt the trend of swapping out older air units for newer models.

Cutting Energy Consumption in Your Home

While many know the power consumption culprits in a home are often the refrigerator, air conditioner, washing machine/dryer, among other electronics, there are also smaller and often forgotten energy users who consumption can significantly raise your power bill each month. Here at the Miami air conditioning experts, we want to help you recognize and correct these scenarios.

There are everyday items that use electricity when they aren't even turned on--as long as they remain plugged in. Little considered items, such as cell phone chargers, generate power consumption throughout the entire time they are connected to an outlet. But it seems a pain to individually unplug everything, right? Connect power cords to a long power strip and switch it off when the items aren't in use--such as when the home is empty.

Even more power draining that chargers are cable boxes. In some cases, the power boxes use more electricity than central air! And your dishwasher? It can use less energy if you open the door after the cycle and allow dishes to air dry rather than using the dry setting.

Save Money on Your Air Conditioner Costs

With the right tips, you can slash significant dollars off of your air conditioning bills. Here at the Miami air conditioner professionals, we want to help you save money! Here are some of our top tips:

Looking for a new central air system? Pay attention to the SEER number! You don't want anything lower than a 13--14 for us here in Miami. Anything below a 13 will cost more money to power and run effectively in your home or office. In addition to the SEER, you'll want to pay attention to the EER--this number should be an 11 or higher. This will give you maximum energy conservation ability.

If you aren't in the market for a new air conditioner--maybe you should be. If your existing air unit has a rating below 11, your utility bills are higher than they would be with the right equipment. If it's under 8, you should seriously consider upgrading.

Pay attention to the outdoor air unit--keep it shaded, surrounded by shady plants and trees, and keep the drapes on the sunny side of your home drawn to lessen the sun's effect on your indoor temperature.

Keep your attic ventilated--the roof has a strong impact on heat absorption from the sun beating down upon it.

Palm Beach Juvenile Center Has Mold Problem

According to a Palm Beach County health inspector, the Juvenile Assessment Center (which contains the Department of Juvenile Justice) has mold-infested office walls that could be toxic to the health of anyone in the building.

Mold in any residential or commercial building is certainly a top health concern. The toxins emitted from mold can do serious harm to the respiratory system and cause permanent or lethal damage. In addition to mold damaged walls, there were also reports of dirty carpets, slimy and old air conditioning equipment, and broken exhaust fans in need of repair. Mold was behind peeling wallpaper, drywall was found damaged due to water, and dead bugs were amidst the window sills. Bird feathers jammed air filters as well.

While some feel that the building is not dangerous for people to be inside, there are already reports of employees who have been repeatedly ill with no clue as to why. A school district police office from the building was the one who requested air quality inspection.

LG Looks to Expand Operations Overseas

Recently, LG was in Chicago showcasing their new line of air conditioners at the AHR (International Air-conditioning, Heating ad Refrigerating) Expo. LG was displaying their residential and commercial air conditioning units, which each boast different efficiency and environmentally friendly engineering.

The annual show is a global draw, and attracts about 2,000 firms from around 30 global countries. LG hopes not only to become the #1 provider of advanced technology air conditioners and home machinery, but also to make an impact worldwide. Last year, LG's global footprint grew by about 10 percent. The company hopes to significantly increase that number in 2012.

Parents Try to Buy A/C for Baltimore School

In Baltimore, parents of students in Middleborough Elementary in Essex made a generous offer to the school board by offering to pay for window unit installation in the school so that the kids can receive air circulation and cool down hot days in the classroom. The school board unfortunately turned down the parents offer--only to turn right around to the state of Maryland and request $70 million in funding to pay for air conditioning in several schools throughout the area.

The air conditioning problems at the school are so bad, in fact, that one student confessed he falls asleep in class regularly because its so hot he can't stay awake. The parents aren't giving up yet. An online petition has been created where parents can sign their support for accepting their air conditioning offer for the school. The parents know that the wall units are not a long term solution, however, the focus is cooling down classrooms for young ones now--not later in the year pending budget approval.
