Weatherproof Your Home

Want to save some money in 2012? Look no further than your own home! By weatherproofing it, you'll be able to cut back utility bills and put a little money back in to your wallet.

Whether you're using your heater or your air conditioner, weatherproofing is an essential part of maximizing your air unit. Sealing areas such as door frames and window sills will go a long way in keeping air from escaping. Essentially, that means more heat inside in the winter and more cool air trapped inside in the summer.

Programmable thermostats range between $25-100 and will help you maximize air efficiency. The thermostat should contribute to about $200 off of your bill, therefore paying for itself and then some. Also, small tweaks to your set temperatures will go a long way in cutting costs--switching the thermostat by 2 degrees will save 5%, and more savings ensue as the temperature is adjusted.

For more tips on saving on your air conditioner, be sure to follow the Miami air conditioning blog!

Before There Was Air Conditioning

Have you ever wondered how people made it through the heat without today's modern technology? Without air conditioners, freezers, and other cooling-off techniques?

Well, turns out a lot of thought went in to staying cool. Every thing from the construction to the location of a person's home (at least the upper class) was carefully planned to maximize cool weather. For example, homes were built with eco-friendly materials that changed with the seasons--warming in the winter and cooling in the summer. There were also copper pipes throughout the house pumping cold water to cool through the walls.

Also, areas of the house were specifically open to flowing fountains, water gardens and other cooling effects. Time was also spent in pools and large outdoor baths. Aside from the main homes, pavilions were built in openly airy spaces to maximize cross breezes and often located near bodies of water.

As for the lower classes, they stuck to hanging in the shade and also dipping their feet in water wells for little jolts of cold. Most medieval buildings, such as forts and even jails, had open windows to allow for air circulation.

Panasonic Releases New Line of Air Conditioners

This week, Panasonic unveiled a new line of Cube ACs, upgraded from the original design and targeted at commercial customers. The new split ACs are outfitted by ECONAVI technology, which computes various factors such as human location, activity level, absence and sunlight levels to determine the amount of air that should be pumped into a building and at what temperature. The technology is available among 65 different models from 11 different series.

Currently, the units are being introduced in India, with hopes of becoming a household name in the commercial industries for services. The eco take on air conditioning is one that they hope to catch on among consumers looking to cut utility bills and up the technological advances.

Hopefully the Miami air conditioning scene gets a piece of Panasonic's new models in the coming months!

Ron Paul's Campaign: Cut A/C For Troops

Among other controversial beliefs that the potential Presidential candidate has, one of his most debated statements is his plan to cut off air conditioning for troops at war. The reasoning? As a means to bring them home. According to Paul, our country is spending $20 billion a year in air conditioning bills to keep the tents in Iraq and Afghanistan cool. His belief is that if you cut air conditioning, the troops would get out of the middle East--something Paul strongly wants. The $20 billion cut would then be redistributed: $10 billion to our national debt and another $10 billion to FEMA, child healthcare or another cause benefiting the American public.

Here in Miami, it's hot. Over in the middle East, it gets to be scorching as well. So, what do you think? Is cutting the a/c too extreme? Aren't there other steps necessary to ensure troops are removed safely? Share your thoughts!

Get the Most Out of Your A/C

Many people don't realize that the air conditioner can do more than simply cool your home off--it can also keep fresh air ventilating throughout your home, control humidity, and contribute to the overall comfort of your residence. A heating, ventilating, and air conditioning system, also called HVAC, is a great machine to handle all of these things.

One caveat to those considering an HVAC--monthly servicing is ideal to keep utility costs down and efficiency up. Common monthly maintenance includes changing the filters. Also, remember to switch it off when you aren't home! When handled right, an HVAC is a relief to the wallet.

If you need a professional HVAC inspection, contact the air conditioning professionals at Edd Helms today!

Landlords & Air Conditioning

One dilemma that tenants may face throughout a rental lease is problems with their air conditioner. It's important to know where your responsibility ends and your landlord's responsibilities begin. At the end of the day, they own the apartment/house, so their concern for the maintenance should be present.

Small repairs or maintenance, such as changing out the filters, are often left at the responsibility of the tenant. These filters are inexpensive and will help keep the air conditioning unit running at optimum levels. Often, they should be changed about 30 days. These are a few bucks at home goods stores, such as your local Home Depot.

Once you get to a bigger problem and require professional air conditioning repairs, you should certainly contact your landlord. You don't want to do any repairs before involving your landlord first, as they may have a specific request or would like to speak with the repair team for themselves.

Keep Your Home at the Temperture You Want it!

Sometimes, setting the thermostat and relaxing while your home cools/heats works out great. You're refreshed, the climate is enjoyable, and everything copacetic. Sometimes, however, it never seems to get a point where it's comfortable--what's with that? Either your cold, searching for a blanket or your hot and searching for circulation. By checking a few parts of your air conditioner, you'll be able to troubleshoot this from happening to you.

First, check the insulation. If you've got cracks where air is escaping, then the air that you're paying to cool (or heat) is flowing right back outside! Talk about a waste of time, energy and money. Insulation should be done throughout the home--think attics and other rooms where air may escape. Also, fix and window or door drafts. The same rule applies--any where air can escape, it will.

Invest in a programmable thermostat. By setting the temperature you wish, you can have your home ready and waiting at a cool 70 degrees when you get home from work, if you would like. The best part, however, is that the air won't be cranking all day. Simply set the thermostat to kick on about an hour before you intend to be home and voila--you'll walk in to the climate you're wishing for.

If you need a professional to come help you optimize the energy efficiency of your home, don't hesitate to call the air conditioning professionals at Edd Helms.

Extend the Life of Your Heater

While many of us in South Florida won't be cranking up the heat any time soon, we at the Miami air conditioning experts like to cover all bases regarding your home a/c unit. And who knows? Temps could continue to drop over the next few months calling for the need to tap the heat up in your home or office.

Like all electronics and machinery, your air unit requires maintenance. Ever turn on the heat and smell a distinct and disgusting burning smell? That's your heat zapping all the dust bunnies that have formed on it in the past months. Gross, right?! Properly cleaning and dusting these ducts will prevent this smell, and also help to clear out any dirt, dust or debris that may hinder the efficient flow of air into your home.

Check wiring to make sure everything is in proper working order. A loose wire or a gap to the outdoors will not only invite critters inside--but it will also allow your paid-for air (hot or cold) to escape back outside. Then you're right back where you started! Insulation and sealing is a vital and important function of a healthy air unit.

A/C Named One of the Greatest Inventions

When it comes to technological advances throughout time, air conditioning is certainly a creation highly regarded by many--especially those of us here in South Florida. Air conditioning has evolved over time from rotary fans to refrigerator style units, to the modern machines that we see today.

Did you know that your air conditioner is a byproduct of almost 100 years of cooling, heating and energy efficiency studies? If you think about it, these complex machines are a true scientific study, and they likely had many trial and error processes underway until there was a working air conditioner for people to use.

Here at the South Florida air conditioning experts, we want to remind you that you should appreciate your air conditioner--don't take it for granted! We are one of the few countries where having an air conditioner is the norm--many European cities (and even Manhattan) are comprised of apartments and homes lacking a cooling system. Count your blessings and kiss your thermostat!

Could Your Home Use an Energy Makeover?

Lower power bills and less energy consumption could be in your near future, thanks to home energy makeovers that help to point out wasteful habits and corresponding remedies for saving on home energy use. Around the home tricks such as weatherstripping, air duct work, insulation, using water saving faucets on plumbing fixtures and swapping out low voltage light bulbs are all home modifications that can go a long way in saving on your monthly bill.

As we become more fixated on cutting carbon footprints and reducing pollution, it only seems natural that monitoring individual energy consumption would be a relevant concern. Other modifications, such as solar panels and energy saving water heaters, dishwashers, and washing machines are all bigger changes that will also save bigger bucks.

Remember, each household can make a difference when it comes to energy conservation. If you need help on how to cut back use in your home, contact the South Florida air conditioning experts and we'll come conduct a energy efficiency survey in your home.

FPL's New A/C FilterSmart Program

Florida Power & Light is embarking on a new endeavor to help customers remember to change out their air conditioning filters in hopes to save utility usage and also to be more energy efficient. The program works by adding a varied fee to your monthly bill and in turn, you receive filters in the air each month to swap out and replace the old one with. The length you commit to is what affects the price: 1 month ($15), two months ($7.50) or 3 months ($5.95) commitment will lock you in to the program for the given length of time.

With the program, delivery and shipping are both free, and any change in fees will be notated by a letter with your monthly bill at least 45 days prior to the change. Benefits of the program can vary depending on personal usage, convenience of not shopping for filters, or overall utility consumption of your household. Also, renters vs. homeowners will have different pros and cons as well--if you rent, should your landlord foot the bill since it should technically extend the life of their unit? Should your landlord be responsible for filters in the first place? These are things to consider. If it seems right for you, the air conditioning repair experts want you to go for it!

Keep Your Air Ducts Clean

The ducts in your air conditioning unit are a vital part of a healthy functioning a/c. Potential health risks such as mold, germs, bacteria and fungus can live in the air conditioning ducts and therefore contaminate the air that is being pumped into your living space. Here at the air conditioning maintenance team, we want to make sure your family and your home are safe.

Regardless of the potential dangers that could form in your air ducts, don't be fooled into thinking they need to be cleaned constantly or that all ducts are subject to these dangers equally. As you get your annual air conditioning system check-up, the ducts will be investigated and you'll know from there if they need to be cleaned. According to the EPA, the ducts will get dirty over time, so cleaning them is logical.

Remember to work with a reputable air conditioning company that you TRUST, and who's diagnosis you value. Your friends at Edd Helms are available for your air needs...call us today!

Up Your A/C Efficiency

As we've told you time and time again here at the Miami air conditioning repair team blog, air conditioning maintenance is essential to a healthy air conditioner unit and also to conserving energy and money. As with other electronics and machinery that is used daily--such as your car, your coffee maker or even your computer, maintenance is key. Changing oil, cleaning out coffee grinds, or even running anti virus software are examples of how these items need maintenance. For your air conditioner, it's a little different, but still important.

The air conditioner has several parts that you need to show some TLC to. One of the easiest and most important parts of a functioning air conditioner is the filter. The filter is an easy and inexpensive piece that you swap out each month to maximize air flow. An old filter gets build up of dirt, dust and other debris that inhibits free flowing air into your home. Subsequently, your air conditioner works harder and uses more energy--no good for your machine or for your wallet!

We recommend marking a date to change your filters and setting it in your Outlook or your phone, so that you don't let months go by without changing it. It takes 5 minutes and goes a long way!

President Obama Doesn't Use Air Conditioning?!

According to President Barack Obama's right-hand man, Obama loves to leave the air conditioner off--even in the midst of summer--to recreate the climate of his native island of Hawaii. Whether it's in the car or the oval office, Obama likes it in the 80s at least.

These insights to the President's climate choice come courtesy of Mr Love, a man who's been his bodyguard/constant companion since 2006. For those not shy of the heat, Mr Love is stepping down from his position to attend business school--which means there are some shoes to fill in Washington.

With weather preference like this, seems like President Obama should make more visits to South Florida, right?! Here at the Miami air conditioning experts, we sure think so. If you prefer your home a little cooler than 80, don't hesitate to contact your trusted air conditioner team at Edd Helms.

Use the Sun to Cool Your Home

It's no secret that Florida is one of the sunniest places in the US. Because of this fact, it makes Florida the ideal place to dive in to solar power. Aside from the fact that solar power can cut energy bills by up to 60%, it's also incredibly beneficial to the environment and cuts down on fossil fuel usage.

As local South Florida air conditioning repair professionals, we understand the value of harnessing solar power. For those who can't undergo the full transition, however, there are energy conserving tricks that can help you maximize your air conditioning consumption and also to stay comfortable in the famous Florida heat.

If you need air conditioning tips and advice, don't hesitate to contact your favorite a/c team at Edd Helms. We've been helping families and individuals "cool it down" for decades here in Miami!

Copper Thieves Target Florida Homes as Well

Throughout the country, hard hit economies have seen an uprising of copper thefts, notably from the outdoor air conditioning units of homes. Here in Florida, we aren't numb to the issue. As reports pop up from near and far, a recent report was filed in the Miami Herald about a vacant Florida City home that was stripped of copper.

A thief broke into the vacant house, located at the 700 block of Northwest 13th Terrace, and stole three sinks (valued at $500), an air conditioning unit (valued at $500) and copper pipes valued at $200. In addition to the lost appliances, the damage to the walls incurred from the removal of these items is around $250.

Across the country in cities like Phoenix, thieves are ruthless--stealing from public schools and therefore causing students to sit in class suffering from unbearable heat.

Tax Credits for Energy Expire This Year

If you've looking to accumulate federal tax breaks for enhancing the energy-efficiency of your home, now is the time to apply the changes. To see tax breaks for the upcoming tax season, homeowners must have the renovations completed by December 31, 2011.

Renovations in your home such as new windows and upgraded air conditioner units can give back to your tax refund.  Tax credits break down for Broward County as follows:

$150 for new boilers/furnaces
$200 for new windows
$300 for a/c units, heat pumps, water heaters, and biomass stoves
$500 for asphalt roofs, insulation

Aside from the initial tax breaks, keep in mind that by making your home more energy-efficient, you're also poised to save money month by month on your electricity bills. Now is the time to make energy upgrades to your home, and we're your go-to for a new air conditioner from your local air conditioning experts!

Don't Touch the A.C. Yet...Jump in Water to Cool Off!

Living near the ocean, there's certainly no shortage of sunny and warm days here in South Florida. Before you crank the air conditioning and post up on the couch, try an alternative way of cooling off. Have a pool in your backyard? Cannonball in! Don't have a cement pond at home? No worries, head over for a dip in the Atlantic. If you'd like to keep it indoors altogether, brave the cold water and take a cold shower.

By cooling off your core temperature, you'll use less air conditioning and electricity. Immerse yourself in cold water and beat the heat! Even when you get out of the water, the evaporation of water off of your skin will continue to cool you off. Don't want a full body cool down? Grab some ice cubes and apply to your wrists--the blood vessels located there will simulate a cooling off of your entire body!

And remember, for the days when you simply want to turn the a.c. on and veg out, make sure your system is healthy by scheduling an inspection with your favorite South Florida air conditioning experts.

How Food Influences Your Temperature

Ever wonder why summer staples like watermelon and lemonade are so popular? Eating and drinking cold foods helps lower your internal temperature on a hot day! This is especially important news for us in South Florida, where temps can be soaring year round. Save the soup and hot chocolate for our few weeks of "winter" and keep things cool the rest of the year.

Also, the way that you prepare your foods will have an affect on your home. By using the microwave or a grill, you'll keep temps under control versus using the oven or stove top. Heat is emitted from several household objects also, such as electronics and lights. Touch a light bulb or a DVD player and you'll see what we mean! Limit the use of heat heavy electronics and you'll keep your home comfortable and cool. The ultimate goal is to use less energy and remain comfortable, thereby cutting down bills and your carbon footprint.

These tips, as well as routine air conditioner maintenance will help cut down your bills and save on utility usage!

Maximizing Fan Usage in Your Home

Fans and air conditioning units make quite the duo when it comes to cooling off your home. Fans can come in many shapes and sizes, and they can do wonders when it comes to circulating air throughout your living space. Give your air conditioner a little break and utilize the power of a fan!

Ceiling fans are the norm in many modern homes. Sitting on a couch underneath a home can cool you off significantly. Just keep in mind that ceiling fans are intended to cool people off--not the entire house! Be sure to flip the fan off when you leave the room to prevent energy wasted.

Also, table fans and stand up fans can oscillate and cool off a group of people or individual. By blowing cool air directly at you, these fans are great for small spaces and a little boost of cool air to keep things comfortable. Some people even invest in industrial fans beside their bed to cool off at night.

As South Florida air conditioning experts, we love sharing our knowledge with our friends and fans. Be sure to check back frequently for helpful energy saving tips!

Air Conditioning Trick:Keep the Blinds Drawn!

Many of us run the air conditioner daily to make our homes and offices comfortable and enjoyable. Nothing is worse than a stuffy space that lacks fresh, cool air! While air conditioners are nothing new to South Florida, there are some secrets to retaining the cool air in your home that we'd like to share with you. As local air conditioning experts, we feel more than obliged to share our knowledge.

One secret you may not think of--keeping your blinds drawn and curtains closed will help keep your space cool. Often, the strong South Florida sun can zap the cool air right through your windows! Now, currently there is a sweet little breeze blowing through our area, so opening the windows in the evening is quite tempting. Remember to turn off your air conditioning if you do this. Otherwise, keep the windows closed and keep all your air conditioner's hard work contained in your home.

Also, did you know plants help absorb cool-air stealing sunlight? By placing flowers and other blooms in the window, they will absorb any sunlight that seeps in.

Programmable Thermostats

Programmable thermostats are a great way to conserve energy in your home or office and to also cut down on utility bills. Despite the hint of fall weather we're experiencing here in South Florida, it's likely that many residents are either still using the a/c or will be within a few days or weeks! One of the tricks we want to offer you to help you save money is to replace your old thermostat with a newer, programmable electronic thermostat.

A programmable thermostat will allow you to set a fixed temperature for your home and also to program a timetable. For example, say you like it cooler when you get home and throughout the evening--you can program your thermostat to your liking by setting it to kick on at 4:30pm, if you get home at 5. You won't be running the air all day to an empty home, and it won't be stifling and stuffy when you walk in the door. Genius!

Stay comfortable and save money on your air conditioning? What could be better!

Energy Awareness Month is Here!

Simple tips can help you reduce energy use and increase your savings. Keep cool as we transition into South Florida "fall" and cut back by following a few handy tips from your air conditioning repair experts at Edd Helms. Considering it's energy awareness month, what better time to get your carbon footprint under control? Let's begin!

Replace filters for your air conditioning unit regularly. Once a month is recommended, and it will allow for your air to flow freely and the unit to run less.

Adjust the thermostat. Keeping the air set at about 78 will lower your annual cost by a few hundred dollars. Also, maintenance once annually will benefit your system.

Check your water heater setting. It should be to about 120 degrees, anything higher is simply costing you more money.

If you have a yard or a terrace, consider a clothes line to cut back use of the dryer. Hanging clothes out to dry is a perfectly green alternative. Plus, it will cut back the heat that your dryer distributes throughout your home when it's running.

Reduce Humidity in Your Home

A few steps can keep your air circulating and humidity at a low point. Your favorite South Florida air conditioning experts want to show you how! You may know know exactly what humidity is--it's the amount of moisture in the air. For hot weather, it becomes that much more uncomfortable. It's important to understand air conditioning settings and other factors that impact the humidity in your home.

The air conditioner typically makes air drier and cooler. Forty percent is the target percent of humidity that will control nasty problems like mold growth in your home. However, simple home tasks such as using your washing machine, showering and cooking can increase the production of condensation and therefore moisture within your home. Done simultaneously, they cause the percentage of humidity to raise to about 60 percent.

To prevent humidity and mold problems, you need to make sure everything in your air conditioning unit is in order. A simple check-up will determine if exhaust moisture, air circulation, excess dampness, or a blockage are causing additional moisture to increase your humidity.

Amazon Workers Claim Warehouses Don't Even Have Air Conditioning

South Florida air conditioning is an essential function to beating the heat on a daily basis. In fact, in the summer months, that goes for most homes and businesses. However, it's apparent that perhaps not all companies feel that way. A recent expose into the Amazon working conditions in the Pennsylvania warehouse are apparently so poor, that employees passed out during summer heat waves because the company didn't have air conditioning in the factories where shipping was organized. Some people even quit over it. In fact, on June 2, 15 employees passed out inside due to the 102 degree work environment.
Publish Post

Also reported, Amazon even had paramedics on standby to wheel out employees post-collapse. They would revive workers, and if people wouldn't get better right away then they were sent home. Amazon representatives couldn't be reached regarding the high turnover rate or the conditions for employees.

You can read more about the article and the incidents here.

Introducing the Portable Air Conditioner!

With the global fascination on all things "mobile," it was only a matter of time before the industry of air conditioning joined in on the fun. Whether you want a little extra cool air at home, at your office or anywhere else you may need a cool down. Aside from not requiring any installation, it's also extremely energy efficient and used on an as-needed basis. Air conditioner repairs are probably a breeze--considering you can take it to whoever needs to fix it!

While it may seem silly to take a portable air conditioner unit around, it's actually smart. You can position it exactly where you want, and you can cool the general area you're in as opposed to an entire home or office. It's keeping you cool without wasting the effect on empty rooms and spaces.

Not that us here in South Florida have much need for a heater, but for those who get chilly, the air conditioner on the go also doubles as a heating mechanism.

Understanding Your A/C

Sometimes, there's questions about your air conditioner that you can't quite figure out. Understanding how your air conditioner works is vital to caring for your air conditioner and also to prevent air conditioner problems. For example, this interesting question was circulating the internet:

"My husband and I are at odds over the temperature of the air that blows out of our air vents. He thinks that if you lower the temperature on the thermostat, the air blowing out of the vents gets colder. I think the air temperature stays the same, regardless of the setting. Who is correct?"

In fact, lowering the temperature of the room does not change the temperature of the air. It simply makes the air conditioner run longer to cool the room/home/office to the desired temperature you've set.

How to Take Your A/C Units into Fall

After several months of grueling heat, your overworked air conditioner could use some TLC. Air conditioning units are a big investment and therefore should be maintained and checked to prevent problems or failures. It is recommended that your home air unit receive bi-annual checkups. For businesses, the frequency is higher--smaller problems can be flagged before big problems arise, disrupting employee productivity and general well-being in the office. Air conditioner elements such as filters, motors, and electrical fittings should be monitored and checked to avoid problems. Aside from preventing problems, the air conditioner units also perform better when they receive attention and maintenance--think of comparing it to an oil change in your car!

If you find yourself seeking a diagnostic visit or have a current problem with your air conditioner, contact the expert air conditioning service repair team at Edd Helms of South Florida for same-day, family-run service.

Toshiba Introduces Voice-Controlled A/C

Remember the clap-on, clap-off lights? Toshiba has taken wireless convenience to a new level by creating a voice controlled air conditioning system. The first of it's kind, the voice activated machine follows 21 basic phrases such as "start," "stop" and "cool breeze," among others. Aside from being a hands free, voice activated breakthrough, the system is also geared to conserve energy. The Toshiba group estimates that the monthly cost for this system is at a groundbreaking low of about $10/month, thanks to the dual compressor which utilizes the same energy a fan would use to power the central cooling. Add in tweaked plumbing and dehumidifiers and 45W energy usage, and you've cut back serious dollars and wattage.

We're excited to see how the Toshiba voice controlled air conditioner fairs as it enters the consumer market. Remember, if you're searching for tips on cutting back energy and monthly air conditioning costs, be sure to check out our expert air conditioning tips! What are your thoughts on this voice-activated development? Would you like this better than traditional home air conditioners

Protect Your Air Conditioner

Few things are less comfortable than a sunny afternoon with a broken air conditioner. Those of you who have experienced it know what an inconvenience it can be. Luckily, there are tips you can practice to keep from dealing with a broken air conditioner! One common problem is debris that builds up in the air conditioner. This can result in several points of the a/c/, from debris at the outside unit such as grass and dirt, or junk that actually gets into the indoor part and can clog the drains, resulting in water backup and leaks.

Ants are a common pest in backyards, and their presence can cause serious damage to your air conditioner. Deter these bugs by spraying Lysol or sprinkling baby powder around the unit to keep them at bay. Also, strategically place your a/c in the shade to cut back on draining effects of direct sunlight. Remember to also change the filter frequently--once a month should be safe to prevent debris from building up and preventing air flow.

Stay Cool for Less

As we near Labor Day, the proverbial end of summer to most, the heat really shows no signs of leaving South Florida any time soon. Thankfully, your favorite air conditioning specialists are here to offer a few tips to maximize your air conditioning dollars as we slowly transition into less-scorching temperatures.  Safeguard your air conditioner first and foremost by regularly changing the filter.

Yearly maintenance is vital to the health of your air conditioner. Think of it like your medical check up, once a year, to make sure everything is working as it should. This small fee will be worth it when it saves you from massive repairs.

Utilize what you've got. Let plants and trees bloom and flourish near your home to "shade" it. Just like when you need a break from the sun, you seek refuge under a big tree, your outdoor a/c/ unit can benefit from the blocked direct sunlight too.

Remember that your air conditioner is a valuable piece of machinery that requires a little TLC to operate at its best, just like your car.

Close Doors to Avoid Cold Air Escaping

It may seem like common sense, but all to often homeowners and business owners alike complain about how high their utility bill is, thanks to cranking the air conditioning full blast. But what's one money drain they are causing for themselves? Leaving their doors wide open. Air, by nature, will travel to open space. Therefore, if you leave your door open, or slide the back door open to allow easy access to and from a back porch for example, you're letting air conditioning escape back outside. This not only causes the air conditioner to work harder, but also longer--adding up to more dollars coming out of your pocket.

Aside from the money issue, it's also incredibly wasteful. Many of us have gotten so used to leaving fans and air conditioning running full blast, or leaving lights on when we leave rooms or the house altogether, that we've lost sight of how much energy we are completely burning away. By practicing habits such as leaving the air set at 78 and incorporating ceiling fans, you can ensure that cold air will circulate without the continuous crank of the potentially overworked a/c unit you've got running. The better you treat your unit, the less likely you'll be dealing with a broken air conditioner.

Hire the Right A/C Repair Company

When you're searching for a company to repair your broken air conditioner, you want to make sure you go with the right company--one that is credible, reliable and has a great reputation. You'll want to be sure of a few things before trusting them to overhaul the air conditioning system in your home or business, such as:

1. Licensing information. Some sneaky business entrepreneurs may try to operate a legitimate company (this applies to all fields, not just air conditioning) without the proper credentials. For the safety of yourself and your family, make sure you go with a company who has all the necessary licensing up to date.

2. Written Estimates. Unfortunately, a person's handshake or verbal quote isn't as reliable as it used to be. To make sure you don't get burned, get a written estimate and assessment so there are few to no surprises once the work is complete. Companies who refuse to do so should signal a red light in your brain!

3. Warranty Information. Does a company stand by their work? If so, what are the terms? These are important things you'll want to know before they begin any work whatsoever.

4. Products. For the past 5 years, every company in the United States who sells residential air conditioners must offer products that have SEERs of at least 13. Energy star models must have SEERs of 14 at the minimum. This is an effective way to reduce power use, and you shouldn't be getting anything less.

Control Home Moisture

Most air conditioning units have a condensation-like drip that can cause a moisture buildup in your home. While many people associate this with the grueling, hot summer months, the truth is that this problem can occur year round. With outdoor temperatures consistent with high humidity and even a moderate Fahrenheit measurement, humidity issues can certainly arise indoors.

High humidity is uncomfortable. It can make you feel one of two ways: hot and sticky, or cold and clammy. Not to mention the distinct humid odor. Aside from these un-pleasantries, the humid conditions can actually cause damage to your home, and also to your body. Eye irritations, allergies, headaches and respiratory problems such as asthma. If you've been dealing with some of these humidity problems within your home, you should get in touch with air conditioning repair specialists at Edd Helms. We can help you to map out a dehumidification strategy and strip the moisture from your home, thereby enhancing the quality of your home air.

Renters & Air Conditioning

When you are renting a home or apartment, major utility problems such as a water leak or a broken air conditioning system are the responsibility of your landlord. But do you know valuable information such as a timeline your landlord intends to handle these situations? Here in Florida, living without air conditioning is barely living at all--at least it will feel that way once the unit breaks down.

While your lease should outline basic guidelines for landlord responsibility, sometimes these are not always followed. If you have a tough time getting your landlord to provide the monetary funds to complete repairs for your living space, you should contact a tenant attorney who specializes in tenant rights. Even if your landlord is located out of town or out of the country, they have a responsibility to provide a pleasant and healthy living space to you. You can even suggest to your landlord that they contact South Florida air conditioning specialists Edd Helms to get you up & running on the same day.

The History of the Air Conditioner

Nowadays, we can't imagine battling the summer heat without the reassuring arctic chill of an air conditioning unit. But like most modern developments, people did in fact survive before it was invented. As air conditioning repair experts, we thought we should share some of the beloved air conditioner's history. And as you probably guessed, the original prototype was invented in Florida.

Dr. John Gorrie utilized an ice machine that blew air over a bucket of ice to bring temperatures down in sweltering Apalachicola, Florida hospital rooms with patients suffering from yellow fever. This advance was made in the 1840s! Gorrie was well ahead of his time, predicting that cooler climates would ease illness and soothe patients. His theories fell upon deaf ears, and air conditioning methods were shelved for about fifty years, when Willis Carrier of New York developed an air conditioning system. His invention was intended to cool printers that overheated due to mass printing jobs. The coolant he used was safer than previous models attempted by other inventors, therefore leading to popularity among stores and factories that needed to cool work spaces and machinery.

Today, the air conditioner continues to evolve, as it has since its inception, with concerns now leaning in topics such as energy efficiency and air quality improvements.

Treat Your A/C Well During the Hot Summer Months

Like most major electronics, your air conditioner requires maintenance to run at its best and to avoid outages. Just like your car needs oil changes and rotations, your air conditioning units needs a little attention to perform at its best.

While most of us are familiar with regularly changing the air conditioning filter, there are certainly additional steps you can take to extend the life and temperament of your air conditioning unit. You should also consider blocking your air conditioner from direct sunlight, which will keep the unit from overworking.

The outdoor unit is susceptible to a lot of exterior obstacles, such as weather, plants, and animals. Dirt and debris can blow in and clog passageways, and lizards and bugs can crawl in and block air as well. Debris and grass should be sprayed off the coils, and the water could potentially damage electronics. Ants are also a culprit of damaged air conditioning units.

You should absolutely hire a professional air conditioning repair company to clean out the unit rather than risk potential injury.

Lightning May Cause Air Conditioning Outages

Living in Florida, we are no stranger to rain and thunderstorms. Also, we’re no stranger to cranking the air conditioning to beat the Florida heat. But this year, there’s been an uptick in air conditioning capacitor outages due to the frequent lightning storms, and yours could easily be next.

What is the capacitor? It’s basically the cylinders that get the A/C started up. Typically the capacitor lasts about ten years, but here in Florida, that time frame can get significantly shortened. The common occurrence of lighting, sometimes 5-7 days per week, increases the chances of lighting surging out the capacitors. Unfortunately, as a homeowner or a renter, there isn’t anything you can do to prevent it. You should never try to repair it yourself either, as the air conditioning units typically contain about 22 volts of energy, which could cause significant problems if mishandled.

While you should get your air conditioner checked annually, the capacitor is a separate case in the sense that it can be fine one hour and zapped the next. Talk with your air conditioning repair company to find out the local rates and process for repairing the part.

And before you get too irate with the weather’s impact on your wallet, remember that lightning isn’t the only contributor to a burnt out capacitor—bugs and lizards can also get in the outdoor air conditioning unit and cause a short circuiting.
